Well we got our answer, Martellus Bennett is out and Dwayne Allen is in.

After it was reported that Bennett was seeking big money in his next contract, the Patriots turned their attention to other options. Until today no one had any idea that other option was Dwayne Allen. Bennett will now move onto free agency where he should find the money he deserves from a team more willing to spend that kind of cash.
Belichick simply did not want to overpay for a player, especially with all the free agents that remain unsigned (Hightower, Butler, Branch, Harmon, etc). So what does Billy do? He goes out and acquires a player who will produce as much, if not more than Bennett did in his time as a Patriot. I love this trade and here is why:
Dwayne Allen can do it all
Allen spent his first 5 NFL season in Indianapolis, playing for the rival Colts. While he was there, Allen established himself as a threat in the passing game. His rookie campaign Allen played in all 16 games, catching 45 passes for 521 yards and 3 TDs. After a torn hip labrum ended his sophomore season after just 1 week, Allen returned to score 8 TD’s in 2013.

Allen possesses a unique strength/speed combination, especially with his 6″3 265 lb frame. His size helped him become a key cog in the Colts run offense due to his great blocking skills. He even lined up at fullback quite a few times for the Colts, opening up gaps for Frank Gore and company.
Allen has all the tools to become a valuable asset for the Patriots. the 26 year old reminds me a lot of former Patriot TE Tim Wright (2014 Super Bowl run) because of his versatility in the offense. The Patriots used Tim Wirght in a variety of formations and sets while Gronk battled injuries that year.Even if Gronk is healthy enough to start the 2017 season, Allen’s strengths as a blocker, pass catcher, and red zone target will help Tom Brady’s offense stay hot.
The Patriots stole this guy
The Tight End free agent class sucks. The top tier guys in the group are players like Jared Cook, Jordan Cameron, and Luke Willson. Not very exciting names or great players, especially for what the Patriots would have to pay for one. This is why this trade is a steal.
PATRIOTS: Receive TE D. Allen / 2017 6th round pick
COLTS: Receive 2017 4th round pick
They got Allen for a bag of Doritos. Great addition because of the weak market and lack of depth in the draft. The biggest thing Belichick was trying to avoid was overpaying for a #2 tight end. He avoided that with this trade. Allen is set to make $5 million in 2017 and 2018, and $7.4 million in 2019. These numbers are significantly less than the $10-12 million that it would have taken to keep Bennet.
Allen is a proven playmaker with plenty of experience that will help him make an impact in a TE happy Josh McDaniel’s playbook. Because Gronk will most likely miss time early next season, it was imperative the Patriots make a move for a proven TE to stash in reserve.
Dwayne Allen was on the Patriots side of Deflate-Gate

The reason I have a fiery hatred for the Indianapolis Colts and their fan base is because of guys like D’Qwell Jackson, Gregg Doyel (Indy Star), and of course Peyton Manning. Dwayne Allen is different though. I saw this when the reports first flooded out after the AFC Championship game and have had a respect for him ever since. Even though I had him on my fantasy team and he completely sucked, I am willing to forgive him because he is now a Patriot.
Already gearing up for another Super Bowl run,
God I love being a Patriots fan.
We’re on to 2017
